How Stancr works
Stancr shows how every side covers the same news story, then lets you pick the side you lean to and argue it out. We don't tell you what to think. We show you what each side is reading, side by side, with links to the original reporting.
Six perspectives
- Far left and far right: outlets at the ends of the mainstream spectrum.
- Left and right: outlets that lean one way, the bulk of each side's news.
- Conspiracy-minded left and conspiracy-minded right: outlets known for conspiracy theories and low factual reliability. We include them because millions of people read them, and seeing how they frame a story is part of understanding it. Their pages are always labelled.
Center outlets, wire services and fact-checkers aren't a side. They count as sources of facts.
Where the stories come from
We follow 52 news outlets across the spectrum and 6 fact-checkers. Each outlet's side comes from published media-bias ratings (AllSides and Media Bias/Fact Check), checked when we add it. An AI model also reads each article. When it places an article more than one step away from its outlet's usual side, the article goes to a person for review.
A story is a group of articles about the same event. Every story page lists the articles it's built from, grouped from left to right, with links to read them in full.
How we use AI
An AI language model writes each story's neutral headline, its key facts, and a short summary of how each side frames the event. It works only from the articles in the story, and every summary links back to them.
- Before a story is published, an automated check compares the summaries' claims with the source articles. A story that fails goes to a person for review, not to the front page.
- When fact-checkers have rated a claim in the story, we show their verdict as they wrote it, and link it.
- When no outlet covered a conspiracy-minded side, the story may show a generated illustration of how that side tends to frame such events. It is always marked “Generated” and never presented as reporting.
- Comments are screened by moderation models under our community rules, with people reviewing appeals.
Principles
- Show, don't steer. No side is presented as the right one. The ranking never favours a side.
- Always link the reporting. Summaries point to the outlets' own articles.
- Label what isn't reporting. Generated illustrations and unverified claims are marked.
- Moderate behaviour, not beliefs. A comment is hidden for attacking, threatening, doxxing or spamming, never for its opinion.
- Readers count apart from visitors. “Where readers stand” counts signed-in readers. Picks without an account are shown separately.
Picking a side and debating
On every story you can pick the side you lean to, see where other readers stand, and reply to each other: counter an argument, agree, or ask. The debate of the day puts one question from the news to everyone, answered for, against or mixed.
